Stara Zagora Third-Graders Learn First-Hand About the Benefits of Recycling

What happens to waste after we sort it for separate collection? Today, pupils from Classes 3A and 3B at Kiril Hristov Primary School in Stara Zagora learned the answers to this question. They attended an open lesson in the Green Classroom, part of the city’s first separate waste collection site. The young but responsible Stara Zagora residents visited at the invitation of Deputy Mayor Radostin Tanev, whose responsibilities include this area.

“When knowledge meets action, change begins, and you are an example of this. I told you the same thing when I visited your school and you were recognised for the quantity of cans and plastic bottles you had collected. Today, I want to remind you again and thank you for your active involvement,” Deputy Mayor Radostin Tanev said as he welcomed the children.

Children Setting an Example: Kiril Hristov Primary School Pupils Recognised for Their Care for Nature

The children listened with interest and asked questions about how plastic packaging can be transformed into new items, old glass into new glass products, and unwanted textiles reused. “Separate collection gives waste a new life instead of allowing it to end up in landfill and pollute the environment,” the Deputy Mayor emphasised.

The third-year pupils gained first-hand insight into waste sorting and recovery processes and saw how small everyday actions can contribute to a cleaner urban environment and to protecting nature more broadly.

Kiril Hristov Primary School pupils consistently demonstrate their commitment to environmental protection through their Nature Ambassadors eco-club, numerous green initiatives and active participation in recycling campaigns. They show that environmental responsibility develops from childhood. The pupils also have significant achievements to be proud of, including first place in the municipal competition “Young Environmentalist: An Art Hero of Separate Waste Collection”.

Deputy Mayor Radostin Tanev told the children that the school had also embraced the idea of introducing separate collection for all its waste. He once again thanked Headteacher Katya Georgieva and the entire school team for their sustained efforts to take environmental education beyond the classroom. “This is how it becomes a practical habit that children can bring home,” he added.

The Municipality of Stara Zagora will continue to support initiatives that make caring for nature a shared mission for schools, families and the community.
