Stara Zagora municipality takes an active role in textile waste management under the texad project

In 2026, Stara Zagora will host an international meeting with representatives of 7 countries to exchange good practices on the topic of financing the process

The Municipality of Stara Zagora held an online workshop within the framework of the TEXAD project, aimed at textile waste management and the implementation of new European Union regulations. The focus of the meeting was the discussion of the Municipality's Waste Management Program with an emphasis on textiles, as well as the consideration of the current national legislation on footwear and textile waste. The meeting was attended by representatives of the Regional Inspectorate for Environment, Water and Water - Stara Zagora, Natalia AD, TexCycle, as well as experts from the municipal administration.

Ms. Rositsa Raykova, Head of the Investments, Energy Efficiency and Green Transition Department, presented the survey conducted among companies and consumers. Among the main conclusions is that for businesses, the biggest challenge in implementing the circular economy is internal resistance to change, and according to citizens, it is companies that bear the greatest responsibility for promoting sustainability in fashion. In addition, 64% of consumers surveyed say that they are aware of the environmental consequences of overproduction and fast fashion and have already started to change their shopping habits.

Several key events are coming up within the framework of the project. In October 2025, a working visit will take place in Mataró, Spain, where the first interregional thematic seminar on “Consumer and Business Awareness” will be organized. In early 2026, study visits and seminars will take place in Enschede, the Netherlands, dedicated to monitoring the implementation of the legislation, as well as in Stara Zagora, where the city will host an international meeting with representatives from seven different countries to exchange experiences and good practices on the topic of financing in textile waste management.

Through its active participation in the TEXAD project, the Municipality of Stara Zagora reinforces its commitment to sustainable management of textile waste in partnership with local stakeholders and European partners.
